You can find friends all over Lost River Cave! Tosha, our Naturalist, found this female box turtle while working on restoration projects around the park. The box turtle was shy at first, but quickly came out of her shell to say hello!
The Eastern Box Turtle is listed vulnerable by the IUCN red list and is a threatened species across many of the states where it resides. This is largely due in part to factors such as road mortality, habitat fragmentation, and disease. Here at Lost River Cave we are proud to provide a safe habitat for animals like this!
